"The End of Physics" by David Lindley

An excellent treatment of the state of the art of physics from the 19th century through present day including super symmetry, hot and cold dark matter and the heat death. The title steams from the fact that at the end of the 19th century, scientists had thought they had come to the end of physics, then radiation was discovered! It's a great read and an efficient way to understand how present day physicists know what they know.

"The Periodic Kingdom" by P.W. Atkins

Do you know the electronic notation of element 115? You'll be able to easily figure it out after reading this book! Mr. Atkins takes you on a tour of the periodic chart as though it is a country with coasts, heartlands and even off shore islands. A great refresher for those who haven't hit the chemistry or physics books in years or a great entry into the realm of the elements for those with no prior knowledge base.
